I. Development.—The development of the Sylvian region of the cerebrum
has engaged the attention of many anatomists. Reichert,* Ecker,f
Pansch,| Mihalkovics,§ Broca,|| as well as several others have studied the
question with great care, and added greatly to our knowledge of this
portion of the hemisphere surface. In reopening the matter I feel that I
need make no excuse, because the very large number of specimens which
