SUMMARY

My Attitüde to the Problem of the Divining Rod, To-day the extreme opponents
regard the divining rod as mere delusion and fraud. Düring the last decades
there has indeed been much abuse and nuisance in this field. However, the
opponents go too far when deliberately ignoring the fact that about 30 years
ago nobody seriously doubted the problem being worth scientific investiga-
tion. It was due to the merit of the 'Verband zur Klärung der Wünschelruten-
frage* (Association for the Investigation of the Divining Rod) that scientific
studies were fostered. Convincing examples have proved this attitude to be
justified. Nevertheless, a sufficient explanation is still wanted. On the continent
one is inclined to take physical ground-stimuli as a cause of the reaction, where-
as in England and in the USA (according to Sir William Barrett) merely psy-
chological or paranormal interpretations seem to be preferred. The author
shows that according to his understanding this explanation does not ade-
quately cover the phenomena.

ce probleme est digne d* investigation scientifique. L'auteur montre ä Faide de
quelques exemples probants qu' une teile opinion est justifiee. Mais, une expli-
cation satisfaisante fait toujours defaut. Sur le continent on est dispose ä ad-
mettre comme causes du phenomene, des Stimuli physiques, alors qu'en Angle-
terre et aux fitats-Unis on donne depuis Sir William Barrett la preference ä une
explication psychique ou parapsychique. L'auteur montre qu' ä son avis, une
teile explication n'est pas non plus satisfaisante.
